One in Four Adults Exposed to Dangerous AI Scam
More and more scammers are using artificial intelligence to clone the voices of family members and carry out financial fraud.
In an article published by Fox News, an expanding phenomenon of AI-based scams was exposed, in which criminals use voice-cloning technology to impersonate relatives and commit financial fraud. According to the article, scammers are able to take a short recording of just about 3 seconds from a social media video or voice message, and use it to create a fake voice that precisely mimics a family member.
Even before making the call, the criminals gather personal information from social networks and public information websites, including names of relatives, addresses and phone numbers, in order to make the impersonation more convincing. They then call the victim, present a fake emergency and demand an immediate transfer of money.
The article said that one in four adults in the United States has been exposed to the dangerous scam. It then offered recommendations for protection, including setting a family code word, a procedure of ending the call and calling back directly to a known number for the family member, and limiting public information on social media.
The writer emphasized that the most effective way to avoid such scams is to slow down in stressful situations, verify identities through direct means, and avoid sending money immediately based on a phone call alone.
