South African Jewish Community Responds to Rising Antisemitism with Identity Strengthening

מאת ערוץ 7

The story · English

Amidst growing antisemitism and hostility towards Israel in South Africa, the local Jewish community is experiencing fear and concern, particularly among students. Many are contemplating emigration or making Aliyah (moving to Israel) due to increasing threats and boycotts on university campuses. Jewish community sources report that post-October 7th, the atmosphere in foreign academic institutions has made it untenable for many Jewish students, with political discussions devolving into direct attacks on their identity and safety. Israeli academic institutions are reportedly stepping in to accommodate these students.

Despite these challenges, the community is demonstrating remarkable resilience and growth. The Israeli model "Tiferet Zkenim - Levi Yitzhak," which operates in approximately 250 locations across Israel, has launched a new morning study group (Kolel Boker) in Cape Town. This initiative aims to combat loneliness among seniors by providing a structured daily routine of communal learning, Torah study, and social interaction.

The new center, located in the Blouberg neighborhood of Cape Town, was established following a demand from the local community and is a joint initiative with the Bukharan Jewish Congress. The Chief Rabbi of South Africa, Rabbi Dr. Warren Goldstein, attended the opening, praising the initiative as proof of a community taking full responsibility for its elderly.

Community representatives explained that retirement often leads to social isolation and loneliness, impacting the physical and mental health of seniors. The "Tiferet Zkenim" model offers a daily anchor, restoring a clear schedule, social connections, and a sense of belonging for retirees. The Cape Town center is led by Rabbi Oshi Der'aan, with daily lessons conducted by Rabbi Hillel Borshtein.
