Jewish Learning Center for Seniors Opens in Cape Town

A new morning "Kollel" (a center for Jewish learning and community) for seniors, based on a successful Israeli model, has opened in Cape Town, South Africa. The initiative, named "Tiferet Zkenim - Levi Yitzhak," aims to combat the loneliness and social vacuum that many elderly individuals experience after retirement.

The center, located in the suburb of Blouberg, offers a daily routine of communal study, Torah lessons, and social interaction over coffee. Unlike traditional senior clubs or occasional lectures, this model emphasizes daily commitment and a sense of purpose, providing a reason for participants to get up in the morning and a community that awaits them.

The opening was spearheaded by the Bukharian Jewish Congress, responding to a growing demand within the local community. Rabbi Oshie Deren leads the new Kollel, with Rabbi Hillel Borshtein delivering the daily lessons.

South Africa's Chief Rabbi, Warren Goldstein, attended the opening ceremony and praised the initiative, calling it proof that a community can fully embrace responsibility for its elderly population. For the seniors in Cape Town, the Beit Midrash (house of study) offers more than just learning; it provides a stable social anchor, restoring the structure, companionship, and sense of belonging that retirement can often diminish.

The "Tiferet Zkenim - Levi Yitzhak" network has already established approximately 250 similar centers across Israel.
