Tesla Driver Filmed Apparenty Asleep While Car Drives Itself

The story · English

A video circulating online shows a 36-year-old Tesla driver from Migdal HaEmek apparently asleep at the wheel while his car continued to move. The footage, believed to have been filmed from another vehicle, shows the driver with his eyes closed and head slumped forward as the Tesla drives on.

The incident sparked public outcry and led to the driver's arrest and subsequent release after questioning. Police confirmed the video was under review by the traffic department's central unit.

Authorities emphasized that advanced driver-assistance systems in vehicles, such as those in Teslas, do not absolve drivers of responsibility. "These systems do not permit the driver to remove responsibility from driving, and certainly not to fall asleep," stated police spokesperson Adar Gitzis. "The driver must control the vehicle and be alert at all times."

Police reiterated that Israeli law requires drivers to maintain control of their vehicle, keep both hands on the wheel, and remain attentive, regardless of the car's technological capabilities. The systems are designed to assist with lane-keeping, speed, and distance from other vehicles, but do not constitute autonomous driving, nor do they allow the driver to disengage from the road.

The investigation will examine the circumstances of the incident, and if the driver is found to have been asleep while the car was in motion, the viral video could lead to further police action.
