Expert Urges Direct Questions to Prevent Suicide

The story · English

Dr. Shiri Daniels, the national professional director of ERAN (Emotional First Aid), an Israeli mental health support organization, stated that suicide is preventable in most cases, though not always. She emphasized that families and friends should not bear guilt if a suicide occurs, as sometimes all efforts are insufficient. Daniels noted that official data in Israel does not show an increase in suicides, even during wartime, as people focus on survival. However, she highlighted that approximately 500 people die by suicide in Israel annually, with potential underreporting, and globally, a suicide occurs every 40 seconds.

Daniels stressed that contrary to public perception, individuals in distress often exhibit early warning signs, present in about 70% of cases. These can include mood changes, withdrawal, decreased energy, confusion, social isolation, and statements like "everyone would be better off without me" or "I'm tired of everything." Some individuals may also begin to say goodbye, settle personal affairs, or give away cherished possessions.

A crucial message from Daniels is the importance of asking directly about suicidal thoughts. She advises against indirect phrasing and encourages asking, "I see something is going on with you. Have you had thoughts of killing yourself?" She explained that such direct questions do not implant ideas but rather convey that the person is not alone. If the answer is yes, she advises listening, thanking the person for sharing, and continuing the conversation, even asking about methods, emphasizing that professional expertise is not required to offer support.

Daniels described the mindset of someone considering suicide as experiencing unbearable emotional pain, where the desire is to end the pain, not life itself. This is coupled with "tunnel vision," a conviction that there is no other way out, the pain will be eternal, and change is impossible. In this state, they also struggle to recognize the suffering their death would cause loved ones.

Regarding media coverage, Daniels warned that headlines attributing suicide to a single cause, like military reserve duty or unrequited love, are dangerous and can legitimize suicidal ideation for those in distress. She advocates for emphasizing that suicide is a result of a mental health crisis, has warning signs, and that help is available.

ERAN receives around 7,000 calls with suicidal content annually, with two to three requiring emergency intervention daily. Daniels concluded by urging anyone in distress, or those close to them, to seek help, stating there is always someone to talk to and always hope.
