US Deploys Carrier Strike Group Near Iran for Extended Operations
The United States has positioned a significant military force, centered around the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, in the Arabian Sea, close to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. This deployment replaces the USS Abraham Lincoln and establishes a substantial floating military base capable of sustained operations in the region.
The USS George Washington, one of the U.S. Navy's largest carriers, operates as part of a larger strike group, including escort warships, providing a self-sufficient force that can project air power and defend itself without relying on nearby land bases. Its strategic location near the vital Strait of Hormuz allows for rapid response to Middle Eastern developments.
The carrier hosts approximately 5,000 crew members and a variety of advanced aircraft, including stealthy F-35C fighters and F/A-18 attack jets, as well as electronic warfare and reconnaissance aircraft. U.S. Navy officials have emphasized the crew's readiness and commitment to prolonged operations, with Vice Adm. Jeff Hughes stating they are prepared for extended deployment.
Daily operations on the carrier are extensive, with aircraft landing roughly every minute and around 70 landings occurring on a typical day. The ship recently marked a milestone with the 200,000th landing by an F-35C. Supporting the large crew requires a massive logistical effort, including about 150 cooks preparing approximately 15,000 meals daily, with supplies delivered by other vessels and helicopters. The carrier itself is nuclear-powered, negating the need for regular refueling.
Former CENTCOM commander Gen. Joseph Votel explained that the deployment aims to maintain a significant and readily available U.S. military presence in the Middle East, acknowledging the potential for prolonged regional instability. While not an immediate signal of military action, the carrier's presence enhances the U.S. capability to quickly deploy air and naval assets if required.
