Experts Recommend Fruits for Children's School Lunches

The story · English

Experts from Clalit Health Services are advising parents on the best fruit choices for children's school lunches, emphasizing the nutritional benefits of incorporating natural foods into their diets. Fruits provide essential fiber for digestion and satiety, vitamins and minerals crucial for growth, and antioxidants that bolster the immune system.

To encourage consumption, Clalit dietitians suggest offering children a choice of fruits and varying the colors, as different colors offer distinct health advantages. They also recommend washing fruits thoroughly and prioritizing seasonal produce, though many fruits are now available year-round due to refrigeration. While fruit peels are rich in nutrients, parents should consider their child's preferences regarding texture and taste, as the fruit is still nutritious without the peel.

For school lunches, fruits that maintain their shape and texture are ideal. Apples are a top recommendation due to their durability and familiar taste, offering vitamin C and magnesium. Grapes are favored for their sweetness and high antioxidant content, including resveratrol in red grapes, which may benefit vascular health. Strawberries are packed with vitamin C, providing a full day's supply in just one cup.

Plums contribute digestive aids and anthocyanins, antioxidants linked to slowing brain aging. Citrus fruits like oranges and clementines are excellent sources of vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. To preserve vitamin C, it's best to pack them whole, or for children who struggle with peeling, the inner segments can be provided in a sealed container.

Yael Chen Revia, a Clalit dietitian for children and adolescents in the Sharon-Shomron district, reiterates the importance of offering variety and choice, particularly in fruit colors, to maximize nutritional intake and appeal to young eaters.
