London Haredi Rabbis End Seminary Placement Discrimination With Unified Ban

The story · English

In London, the Haredi rabbinical court of the United Communities of Haredi Communities took an unprecedented step to combat discrimination in seminary placements by issuing a halachic ruling forbidding the opening of any seminaries in the city as long as even one girl remained without a placement. This decisive action, announced last week after a warning letter a month earlier, created significant tension within the local community and prompted intensive behind-the-scenes efforts to resolve the issue.

By Friday evening, all twenty girls who had been left without a seminary spot were successfully placed in institutions, allowing the seminaries to open as scheduled. The rabbinical court then sent a letter expressing their blessing for the full resolution. This firm stance has been widely praised across the Haredi community, with many noting that while in other places numerous girls start the year without placements due to lack of connections or favoritism, the London rabbis demonstrated that it is possible to fight strongly for every individual.

Communities worldwide are hopeful that London’s model will be adopted elsewhere to end the painful phenomenon of girls being left without educational frameworks. The case has drawn attention as a significant example of communal leadership ensuring equal access to religious education for all girls in the Haredi sector.
