Kibbutz Dafna Revitalizes Northern Israel Tourism with New Commercial Complex
Kibbutz Dafna, located near Kiryat Shmona and the Dan and Banias streams in northern Israel, is transforming from a traditional agricultural community into a vibrant tourist destination. Established in 1939 during the "Tower and Stockade" period, the kibbutz has long been a stopover for travelers, but recent investments have turned it into a commercial and tourism hub called "Dafnala." The project aims to encourage visitors to stay longer by offering a variety of experiences including dining, shopping, and lodging.
The revitalization began before the outbreak of war in October 2023, which temporarily halted progress. Renovations resumed in April 2025, culminating in the reopening of the complex during Sukkot 2025. The investment totaled approximately 14.5 million shekels, with a planned return over ten years. The complex now hosts a bakery named "Jolan," a renewed "Pizza Truck," an ice cream shop called "Booza," and a longstanding natural products store, with plans to add a delicatessen featuring local cheeses, wine, and custom sandwiches.
Dafna's vision is to create a comprehensive tourist experience rather than a single attraction. The kibbutz operates a travelers' hotel with about 90% annual occupancy and has added new dining options such as "Columbus," an American-style burger diner named after the owners' grandmother. The area also features a unique vintage motorcycle museum curated by local resident Elad Cotton, showcasing 58 motorcycles, many still operational, including models linked to notable figures like Robert M. Pirsig and Elvis Presley.
Environmental and wellness initiatives are underway, including a forest garden project that combines edible and medicinal plants, and a "no-dig" vegetable garden promoting soil and human healing. Visitors can also enjoy the "Fish Garden," a peaceful spot by the Dan stream offering fresh trout and fish and chips under shade trees.
The iconic Pizza Truck, a pioneer food truck in northern Israel since 2012, has been revived with new toppings and local ingredients, maintaining its casual, picnic-style dining ethos. Future plans include expanding the complex by 15%, extending evening activities, hosting events, installing electric vehicle charging stations, and introducing Asian cuisine to diversify offerings. The kibbutz aims to build a tourism product that integrates hotel accommodations, food, nature, agriculture, history, and family activities, creating a new chapter for Dafna beyond its pre-war identity.
