Experts Reveal Common Hair Washing Mistakes That Damage Hair Health
Hair washing is a daily routine often taken for granted, but dermatologists emphasize its importance for scalp and hair health. Dr. Alex Ginzburg, a hair specialist, explains that shampooing is primarily about cleaning the scalp and hair, not just appearance or smell. Neglecting to wash hair can weaken it, causing breakage and hair loss, while washing does not cause hair to fall out since hair roots lie beneath the skin.
The frequency of washing depends on hair type and scalp condition. Oily hair, due to more active sebaceous glands producing sebum, requires daily washing to prevent buildup, while dry hair benefits from washing only twice a week to avoid worsening dryness. Sebum production typically decreases with age, especially after menopause, leading to drier scalp and hair.
Regarding shampoo ingredients, Ginzburg notes that sulfates and salts, often avoided in natural or health-focused products, are important for effective cleaning. He suggests alternating between shampoos with and without these ingredients to balance cleanliness and hair care, especially for those with treated hair. Proper washing technique is also crucial: use fingertips, not nails, and wash with lukewarm water to protect hair integrity.
Hair loss seen during washing is often hair that naturally shed but remained trapped by static electricity until shampooing. On average, people lose about 100 hairs daily, with more visible shedding occurring if washing is less frequent.
Conditioner plays a vital role in protecting hair, especially on the lengths and ends, preventing water from entering hair shafts and causing breakage. Applying conditioner before shampooing on dry hair can further protect hair during washing. Hair masks are recommended twice weekly for added flexibility and split-end prevention.
Drying hair gently is essential; vigorous towel rubbing and close contact with hair dryers can damage hair. Experts advise patting hair dry and keeping hair dryers at least 20 cm away. Tight hairstyles and hair accessories that pull on hair can cause breakage and should be avoided, as should sleeping with hair tied up. Using a silk cap can help protect hair if it must be tied during sleep.
