Gadi Eizenkot Rejects Ofer Winter as Defense Minister Amid Political Rivalry

Gadi Eizenkot, former IDF Chief of Staff and leader of the Yashar party, has firmly ruled out appointing Ofer Winter as Israel's defense minister. In an interview with Channel 13 on Wednesday evening, Eizenkot stated that while Winter is a competent field commander, he lacks experience in strategic military leadership and senior roles, disqualifying him from the defense minister position.

Ofer Winter, chairman of the Amcha Israel party, responded critically to Eizenkot's remarks, referencing Eizenkot's strategic decisions during his tenure, including appointments of figures like Yair Golan and Aharon Haliva. Winter expressed pride in not being part of what he described as flawed strategic leadership.

Winter launched his party just the day before and is widely seen in political circles as aiming for the defense minister role. His platform emphasizes security issues and reforming policies related to ultra-Orthodox military service. He also advocates reducing the burden of reserve duty to ease pressures on Israel's economy, education system, and government functions.

Winter's party seeks to distinguish itself from existing right-wing and religious Zionist parties, targeting right-wing voters disillusioned with the current government. Some of his support may come from voters previously aligned with parties associated with Eizenkot and Avigdor Lieberman. Winter has also made clear he will not support Eizenkot as prime minister and intends to join a broad right-wing government when formed.
