Ofer Winter Endorses Netanyahu as Sole Candidate for Prime Minister
Ofer Winter, retired Brigadier General and chairman of the Amcha Israel party, announced on Thursday that he will recommend only Benjamin Netanyahu for the position of Prime Minister. In a video statement, Winter emphasized that his loyalty is to the people of Israel, not to any individual, but clarified that since his party is part of the right-wing camp, their sole recommendation is Netanyahu as its leader.
Winter also addressed several policy issues, including the integration of ultra-Orthodox Jews into the Israel Defense Forces, stating that this will happen with or without the cooperation of ultra-Orthodox political activists. He called for voluntary migration from Gaza and promised a decisive approach rather than mere management of the situation. Additionally, Winter criticized the Ministry of Strategic Affairs, pledging a new, effective public diplomacy effort in support of Israel.
Following the launch of Amcha Israel on August 25, 2026, political analysts suggest Winter is positioning himself for the role of Defense Minister. His platform is expected to focus on security and changes to policies regarding ultra-Orthodox military service. The party aims to attract right-wing voters disillusioned with the current government, as well as some who previously supported parties associated with Gadi Eizenkot and Avigdor Lieberman. However, Winter made clear he does not support Eizenkot as Prime Minister and intends to join a broad right-wing government if formed.
