Tunisia Fires Coach Sabri Lamouchi After Heavy World Cup Loss to Sweden

Tunisia has dismissed head coach Sabri Lamouchi after only one World Cup match, following a crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden early Monday morning. According to several European reports, the Tunisian Football Federation called an emergency meeting immediately after the game and decided to end the French coach’s tenure at once.

The loss left Tunisia under pressure just five days into the 2026 World Cup. It also came after a 5-0 friendly defeat to Belgium before the tournament, deepening concern around the team’s form. Tunisia now has to appoint a replacement quickly before its next match against Japan on Saturday.

Lamouchi, 54, was hired after Sami Trabelsi was fired when Tunisia were eliminated in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16. His spell in charge was extremely short, lasting only five matches. In that period, Tunisia recorded one win, three losses and one draw.

Possible successors mentioned by local and European reports include former Sunderland winger Wahbi Khazri and Mondher Kebaier, who coached Tunisia at the 2022 World Cup. Tunisia will try to recover against Japan in its next World Cup fixture.
