Israeli MK Zvi Sukkot Sparks Outrage After Destroying Palestinian Terrorist Monument Without IDF Coordination

Israeli Member of Knesset Zvi Sukkot, from the Religious Zionism party, caused a political uproar after he personally destroyed a monument honoring terrorists in the Palestinian village of Madama. The incident occurred despite the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) not coordinating or authorizing the action, leading to sharp criticism from both the military and political figures. Sukkot claimed he had requested the IDF to remove the monument but, receiving no response, took matters into his own hands using a hammer during a visit to the village.

The IDF condemned Sukkot's actions as unauthorized and manipulative, stating that the military regularly removes inciting monuments with proper approvals and coordination with the Civil Administration. The IDF emphasized that Sukkot's unilateral destruction disrupted operational priorities and misused the security forces assigned to protect him. The military ordered the cessation of the destruction and removed Sukkot from the site.

Political leaders across the spectrum denounced Sukkot's conduct. Opposition leader Gideon Sa'ar stressed that decisions in the West Bank must be made by the state and security forces alone, criticizing Sukkot for undermining this principle. Gadi Eisenkot, head of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, called Sukkot's behavior shameful and damaging to Israel's security and reputation. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett accused the government of harming Israel's security for political gain, while Yair Golan of the Democratic Union called for Sukkot's removal from the Knesset, accusing him of inciting further violence.

Sukkot defended his actions by stating his intent to prevent the glorification of terrorists and to stop the indoctrination of future generations in Palestinian villages. A security source revealed that the IDF had advised postponing Sukkot's planned visit due to recent unrest but that he insisted on proceeding, leading to the unauthorized incident. The controversy highlights tensions within the coalition and ongoing disputes over security policy and the handling of Palestinian incitement in the West Bank.
