El Al Signs Starlink Deal to Bring In-Flight Internet Starting in 2027
El Al announced on Monday that it has signed an agreement with Starlink, the satellite internet service of SpaceX, to install advanced internet systems on its aircraft starting in 2027. The airline said the service is expected to be offered free of charge to customers, subject to terms that will be set later.
If fully implemented, the upgrade would mark a major shift from today’s in-flight internet offerings on many airlines, which often cost money and provide slower speeds. El Al says the new system should let passengers browse, work, stream content and stay connected throughout the flight, even at cruising altitude.
Starlink uses thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit, which allows faster and more stable connections than traditional satellite internet. In recent years, it has become one of the most sought-after solutions in aviation, with more airlines worldwide adopting it to improve the passenger experience. El Al is joining a broader trend, after low-cost carrier Wizz Air also announced about a week ago that it would add Starlink to its fleet.
El Al estimates the new system will allow hundreds of passengers to connect at the same time, including on long-haul routes. CEO Eli Lely said, “Integrating Starlink technology into El Al aircraft is a significant step forward, enabling customers to stay connected in the air, enjoy live streaming, and continue working and communicating seamlessly. The move reflects our commitment to providing an advanced flight experience that meets international standards in aviation.”
