US Envoy Clarifies Golan Sovereignty Stance Amid Israeli Criticism

Tom Barrett, US envoy to Syria and ambassador to Turkey, clarified his remarks about the Golan Heights following criticism from Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Barrett had described the Golan as occupied Syrian territory, which contradicted the Trump administration's 2019 recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the area. Barrett explained that his comments were meant to reflect historical documentation and the ongoing UN dispute over the territory, not to challenge the US policy established by President Trump. He emphasized that US policy on the Golan remains unchanged since 2019.

Barrett also addressed Lebanon, stating that the US negotiates only with the legitimate Lebanese government and highlighted the Washington framework signed on June 26 as a historic opportunity for peace and prosperity. He noted the complexity of disarming Hezbollah, which is designated a foreign terrorist organization by the US and is not part of negotiations. Barrett stressed the importance of understanding the role of Iran in supplying weapons to Hezbollah and the political dynamics involved.

The controversy arose after Barrett said Israel occupies the Golan despite UN resolutions designating it Syrian territory, a statement that drew sharp rebuke from Gallant, who accused Barrett of inaccuracies and contradicting Trump’s stance. Barrett urged that his remarks be read in full context, clarifying he did not support the UN position but was highlighting the longstanding dispute and the basis for negotiations rather than maps. The US envoy’s comments come amid ongoing regional tensions and efforts to advance diplomatic frameworks in Lebanon and Syria.
