US Envoy to Syria Sparks Outrage with Golan Heights Remarks and Criticism of Israel
Tom Barrett, the US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy to Syria, ignited controversy in the United States after stating in a podcast interview that the Golan Heights does not belong to Israel. Speaking on Mario Naufal's podcast, Barrett criticized Israeli policy in the region and suggested that American support for Israel is waning, asserting that Israel understands it cannot indefinitely expand its territorial control.
These comments provoked strong backlash from prominent conservative media figures and activists in the US. Conservative activist Laura Loomer accused Barrett of misunderstanding the Trump administration's foreign policy and promoting anti-Israel narratives that serve foreign interests, citing his connections in the Arab world and Turkey.
Senior journalist Mark Levin also condemned Barrett, labeling him a diplomatic disaster. Levin argued that while Israel fights to protect its borders and minorities from jihadist forces, Barrett chooses to attack Israel, effectively encouraging terrorists. Levin joined calls for Barrett's immediate dismissal, stating his views contradict the Trump administration’s stance and calling him a "mouthpiece" and "lapdog" of Turkish President Recep Erdogan.
