Israeli Defense Minister Rebukes US Envoy Over Syria Strike Comments Amid Rising Tensions

Over the weekend, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted a targeted strike in southern Syria, killing a terrorist involved in planning imminent attacks against Israeli forces. The IDF stated the operation was necessary to neutralize an immediate threat and pledged to continue safeguarding Israeli citizens and soldiers. In a rare public rebuttal issued during the weekend, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz defended the strike, explaining that it was authorized only after multiple consultations with the Prime Minister and security agencies. Katz emphasized that Syria was warned through senior channels before the attack and that intelligence about Turkish intentions to endanger Israeli security at Abu al-Duhur airbase was shared with US officials. Katz also criticized Erdogan, saying he was "caught with his hand in the cookie jar" and forced to back down, underscoring Israel's resolve to counter any threats to its security. Katz further accused Barrett of inaccuracies and positions contradicting President Trump’s stance on the Golan Heights.
