National Security Minister Ben Gvir Supports Transferring West Bank Enforcement to Police with Conditions
Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has agreed to Defense Minister Israel Katz's proposal to transfer civilian enforcement powers in the West Bank from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to the Israeli police. However, Ben Gvir has set conditions to expand this transfer, demanding that responsibility for the Border Police in the West Bank also be moved from the IDF to the police, in line with the coalition agreement which he claims has been violated so far.
Ben Gvir further insists that administrative arrest and restriction powers currently held by the Defense Minister and the IDF be transferred to the National Security Minister and the police. He emphasized that these powers have not yet been used against anarchists and anti-Zionist groups opposing the state, and argued that it is time to apply these tools against such enemies of Israel.
According to Ben Gvir, implementing these steps will enable the Israeli police to effectively assume full responsibility for enforcement authorities in the West Bank, marking a significant move toward Israeli sovereignty in the area.
