Jared Kushner Meets Hamas Leaders in Cairo Ahead of Netanyahu Talks to Advance Gaza Truce

Jared Kushner, the special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump for the Middle East, arrived at El Alamein International Airport on Sunday to promote agreements for stabilizing the Gaza Strip and advancing the political process amid efforts to solidify a ceasefire. A Palestinian source told Al Jazeera that Kushner plans to meet soon in Cairo with a Hamas delegation, alongside senior officials from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey. Kushner reportedly decided to hold this meeting with Hamas leadership before his scheduled talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv.

Simultaneously in Cairo, Khalil al-Hayya, head of Hamas's political bureau, met with Egyptian Intelligence Minister Hassan Rashad. They discussed advancing decisions from the Sharm El-Sheikh peace summit and implementing Trump's plan. Al-Hayya praised Egypt's efforts toward stability and reiterated Hamas's commitment to the U.S. plan to end the war and rehabilitate Gaza. The Hamas delegation reviewed political developments in the West Bank and Gaza, accusing Israel of daily violations, ignoring the Sharm El-Sheikh agreement and Trump's roadmap, and explicitly rejecting the peace plan.

Hamas also detailed the situation in Jerusalem and Israeli prisons, calling for regional and international responses. These developments occur amid challenges in implementing a 15-point plan devised by Nikolay Mladenov, president of the "Peace Council" established by Trump. The plan includes transferring Hamas's weapons to a technocratic Palestinian committee to govern Gaza, a proposal opposed by Netanyahu.

In the coming week, Kushner and Mladenov are expected to visit Israel as part of efforts to realize the comprehensive American peace vision initiated with the ceasefire in October 2025.
