Small Ultra-Orthodox Protesters Demonstrate Outside Chief Justice Isaac Amit's Home

By צביקה סגל

The story · English

A small group of ultra-Orthodox protesters from hardline factions demonstrated on Sunday evening near the home of Supreme Court President Isaac Amit in Mavo'ot Zion, amid a broader escalation in protests over arrests of yeshiva students and the legal handling of demonstrators detained in recent weeks during road blockages and disturbances across Israel.

The protest comes just two weeks after a violent incident outside the home of Supreme Court Deputy President Noam Sohlberg. Earlier on Sunday, indictments were filed against four suspects in that case: Nachman Platnik, Avraham Fried, Gershon Hanoch, and Shimon Taaf, according to police. Investigations into additional suspects are still ongoing.

According to the indictment, the demonstrators chased a police vehicle that first arrived at the scene, shouted at officers, "Nazis" and "We will die and not enlist," and at one point one of the officers fled the area out of fear of being harmed. Platnik and Fried were also charged with trespassing after allegedly entering the grounds of Sohlberg's home in an effort to "frighten and provoke" the judge.

The investigation file says each of the two implicated the other during police questioning. Police were also deployed Sunday evening near Amit's residence and were monitoring events in an effort to prevent clashes and public disorder.
