IDF Strikes Hezbollah Targets in Lebanon Following Terror Attacks Amid US-Mediated Talks

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted targeted strikes against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon shortly after the group carried out terror attacks against Israeli forces. The operation, which took place near Deir al-Zahrani, resulted in the killing of Abu Hassan Alaa, a senior commander in Hezbollah's Badr unit, who was involved in planning multiple terror activities including drone attacks on Israeli troops. The IDF also targeted Hezbollah command centers and a battalion headquarters in Nabatiyeh and Ansar, killing 11 militants including Ali Samir Al-Hajj Hassan, a commander in Hezbollah's Radwan Force.

The strikes followed a severe incident on Friday night when an IDF engineering unit was hit by an explosive drone, leaving one officer and two soldiers seriously wounded. The IDF warned residents in northern Israel to expect explosions during the night as part of the planned military actions. Hezbollah's strategic tunnel network in the Ali Taher ridge area remains a focal point, with the IDF intensifying efforts to neutralize these defensive positions.

The escalation has raised concerns in Beirut about the potential collapse of the US-mediated direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, scheduled to resume in Rome in about two weeks. Lebanese media and political sources suggest Hezbollah is increasing military pressure to derail the talks, possibly awaiting Iran's approval to further escalate amid ongoing tensions over the Tehran-Washington nuclear agreement.

Lebanese officials, including President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, condemned the Israeli strikes, viewing them as a threat to the political process and civilian safety. Hezbollah called for an end to the direct negotiation track with Israel, warning against attempts to impose new realities. Conversely, Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's spokesperson Doron Spilman, emphasized Israel's commitment to serious negotiations and framed the military actions as necessary to strengthen the peace process.

This latest round of violence marks the deadliest escalation since the ceasefire took effect, with fears growing that the conflict could widen and disrupt diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving longstanding disputes between the two countries.
