Female Israeli observers serving in two different sectors near the Gaza border have reported daily sightings of Hamas militants approaching the "yellow line," a buffer zone inside Israeli territory. They warn that despite identifying armed suspects and potential threats, military commanders are delaying or denying authorization to engage, raising concerns about the safety of troops on the ground.

The observers compared the current situation to the period before the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, noting that militants are testing Israeli responses similarly. One observer said, "It feels like October 6 again," emphasizing that Hamas militants are probing to see if Israel will react. The observers described a complex approval process for firing permits, which requires authorization from increasingly senior officers, making it difficult to respond quickly to threats.

In a recent incident near the fence, an observer identified a suspect carrying a weapon and engaging in suspicious activity possibly related to planting explosives. Despite alerting commanders, no clearance was given to neutralize the threat, which the observer attributed to a desire to maintain "industrial calm." The observers expressed frustration that their warnings do not translate into action, endangering soldiers who operate just hundreds of meters from militants.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel will continue to thwart any threats against its citizens and soldiers, asserting that policy remains unchanged. However, the observers fear that the current approach leaves troops vulnerable. They also expressed anger that some militants they identify may have participated in the October 7 massacre of Israeli civilians, with one saying, "Not everyone who massacred on October 7 was killed."
