Israeli Forces Kill Hamas Platoon Commander in Khan Yunis Amid Third Day of Gaza Strikes

After a period of relative calm, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have continued for the third consecutive day. On Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced they targeted and killed a Hamas platoon commander in Khan Yunis who was planning terrorist attacks. The strike was conducted from the air to neutralize the threat to Israeli forces. Palestinian sources reported one fatality in the strike, which targeted a man riding an electric bike in the Al Amal neighborhood of western Khan Yunis, with two others seriously wounded.

In a separate incident, Palestinian sources also reported a fatality and several injuries from an Israeli drone strike involving three missiles in the Sheikh Ajleen neighborhood of western Gaza City. The previous day, an IDF strike in Beit Lahia killed a Hamas operative, an operation reportedly authorized by Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir. This marked the first Gaza strike approved by the Chief of Staff, a practice that was previously routine but had been halted under U.S. pressure following a ceasefire.

Since the ceasefire, Israeli forces have reportedly killed 514 militants and injured approximately 150 in the Gaza area, striking 790 targets. Officials emphasized that the IDF's actions are guided by clear political directives amid ongoing negotiations, rejecting claims of a lack of motivation to prevent attacks. The escalation reflects a widening threshold for Israeli military responses in Gaza under current political and military leadership.
