Economy Minister Nir Barkat Denies Attempt to Replace Netanyahu Amid War Criticism

Israeli Economy Minister Nir Barkat has strongly denied recent reports suggesting he was involved in an attempt to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the start of the current war. Barkat appeared on the 'Patriots' program to present his version after media claims surfaced that he, along with other political figures, tried to promote a constructive vote of no confidence against Netanyahu. During the interview, host Yinon Magal confronted Barkat with these allegations, which Barkat immediately rejected, clarifying that his early criticism was focused strictly on security policy and not an effort to stage a coup.

Barkat explained that his disagreements primarily concerned former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant's positions, especially regarding the entry of Palestinian workers into areas within the Green Line and the lack of a decisive response on the northern border. He stated that he demanded Netanyahu resolve these disputes, as is expected of a minister during wartime. Barkat also noted a significant shift in decision-making processes after members of the 'State Camp' left the security cabinet, leading to a more aggressive policy approach.

He emphasized that the accusations of attempting to oust Netanyahu are unfounded and that his previous criticism has since given way to full support for the current government line. Separately, Almog Cohen officially confirmed his intention to run in the upcoming Likud primaries, where Barkat is also expected to compete.
