Israeli Drone Maker Euro Sentinel Rebuilds After Iranian Missile Strike, Targets Chinese Market Dominance

In April, just days after American company Valorix acquired a 70% stake in Israeli drone manufacturer Euro Sentinel for 35 million shekels, an Iranian missile struck and completely destroyed the company's factory in Petah Tikva. Forced to relocate to Tel Aviv, Euro Sentinel has since undergone a significant transformation and now aims to become a leading player in Israel's defense sector by mass-producing reconnaissance drones. The company seeks to challenge the dominance of Chinese drones used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) ground forces.

Chinese drone giant DJI controls about 80% of the global drone market, both civilian and military, benefiting from substantial government subsidies and export incentives from Beijing. These advantages include full logistics cost coverage until 2027 and tariff rebates, alongside mandatory Chinese government access to exported product data, raising security concerns in the West. For example, the UK recently discovered that a Chinese-made unmanned naval vessel transmitted data back to China.

Euro Sentinel plans to reduce its drone unit cost from around $30,000 to between $20,000 and $25,000 by shifting to mass production using injection molding machines, increasing output from 30 manually assembled units per month to 100-150 units monthly. This price point remains competitive against American drones priced at $40,000-$50,000 and French drones at $35,000-$40,000, though still above Chinese models costing $10,000-$15,000. The company currently employs 25 people and serves special IDF units and Israeli police, with about half its sales abroad to countries including the Netherlands, Morocco, and Japan.

Euro Sentinel is set to launch a new drone in November featuring advanced visual positioning technology to overcome GPS vulnerabilities, incorporating a camera from Israeli defense firm Next Vision. The company emphasizes that less than 5% of its components are Chinese. Euro Sentinel aims to produce 1,000 drones annually by 2029, focusing on European markets, especially Eastern Europe, where militaries seek alternatives to Chinese drones used by Russia. The company is working with distributors in Poland, Romania, Italy, and Greece and is prepared to establish local production lines if large orders materialize.

Ophir Avram, Euro Sentinel's marketing VP, highlighted the strategic importance of developing advanced Israeli defense systems to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, which could become vulnerabilities during geopolitical crises. The company’s drones currently operate in Israeli special forces and police units for reconnaissance and crowd control missions, with ambitions to expand sales to the IDF’s ground forces from dozens to hundreds annually.
