Israeli Transport Ministry CEO Conducts Undercover Bus Inspections Amid Service Complaints

The CEO of Israel's Ministry of Transport, Moshe Ben Zaken, has taken an unusual step by going undercover as a bus inspector. As part of a surprise inspection campaign set to last about a month, Ben Zaken was spotted this morning sitting at the front of a bus wearing sunglasses to conceal his identity. This initiative aims to address widespread public criticism regarding poor service quality, frequent delays, and driver conduct in the country's public transportation system.

The Ministry of Transport announced the campaign on Tuesday, emphasizing that Ben Zaken will continue to participate as a covert inspector throughout the operation. The surprise checks will cover various aspects of public transport, including urban and intercity buses as well as bus stations. However, the campaign does not currently include trains.

This move comes amid significant public dissatisfaction and complaints about the performance of bus companies and their drivers. Last year, the State Comptroller's report highlighted that the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety received the highest number of complaints in 2024, totaling 1,759. The Ministry hopes these inspections will improve accountability and service standards in Israel's public transportation network.
