Agudat Yisrael Challenges Election Committee's Ban on Serial Numbers on Ballots

Agudat Yisrael, led by chairman Yitzhak Goldknopf, has formally requested the Central Elections Committee chairman, Judge Noam Solberg, to reconsider a recent decision banning the use of serial numbers on ballots for Israel's 26th Knesset elections. The party argues that this long-standing practice, in place for over 40 years, is essential for managing election logistics and protecting voter rights. The decision followed a petition by the Likud movement but, according to Agudat Yisrael, it risks undermining voter privacy and the freedom to vote without interference.

The party's legal representative, Attorney Avraham Westman, contends that the ban could significantly harm both parties and voters by removing a precise tool to distinguish between those who have voted and those who have not during election day. Agudat Yisrael warns this could impair efforts to encourage voter turnout and complicate election day operations.

Moreover, the party claims that the ban might ironically compromise voter confidentiality, as parties might resort to more intrusive methods to gather voting information. To address these concerns, Agudat Yisrael proposes alternatives such as deploying committee representatives to document voting progress and erase names from voter rolls, or returning to manual, analog tracking of voters by party representatives.

The party urges Judge Solberg to hold a renewed discussion on the issue, seeking a balanced solution that maintains election management efficiency while safeguarding voter privacy and ballot secrecy.
