Agudat Yisrael Declines Supreme Court Petition on Real-Time Vote Reporting

Agudat Yisrael has announced it will not join the Likud party's petition to the Supreme Court challenging the ban on reporting real-time voting data from polling stations. The party explained its decision stems from a lack of faith in the Supreme Court, which it believes has long favored left-wing agendas and is unlikely to rule in favor of Haredi parties.

Despite not joining the petition, Agudat Yisrael is actively advocating for the preservation of the existing reporting mechanism. The party's representative on the Central Elections Committee, Adv. Avraham Yustman, submitted a detailed response to Committee Chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg, outlining a unique system the party has employed for over 40 years to manage election day effectively. This system, originally using paper logs and now adapted for 'kosher' phones due to the community's avoidance of smartphones, allows for the tracking of voter numbers to ensure efficient turnout and prevent long queues.

Agudat Yisrael emphasizes that this mechanism is crucial for two reasons: ensuring the smooth exercise of democratic voting rights and accommodating the Torah-learning community, for whom avoiding Torah study is paramount. The ability to manage voter flow prevents congestion, benefiting the entire election process. The party also argued that the data is vital for parties with distinct community characteristics, countering claims that the ban has a negligible impact.

Furthermore, Agudat Yisrael distinguished between the secrecy of the ballot and privacy, noting that the law already permits limited data transfer from voter registers for election encouragement. The party affirmed its commitment to fighting for the right of parties to manage election day efficiently and in accordance with the lifestyle of the Haredi public, despite the ongoing legal dispute.
