Maccabi Tel Aviv Considers Position Shift for Roman Sorkin Amid Deep Frontcourt

Maccabi Tel Aviv surprised fans by announcing the return of Shane Hunter to the team ahead of the upcoming season, adding depth to their frontcourt. Coach Oded Katash praised Hunter as a versatile big man with strong movement, rebounding, and defensive skills. This move means Maccabi will have four centers on the roster: Roman Sorkin, Daniel Theis, Armando Bacot, and the newly naturalized Hunter. Hunter is expected to primarily play in the Israeli Basketball Premier League, as he is not considered a foreign player, and the team decided to recall him from loan rather than extend it.

The crowded frontcourt raises questions about Sorkin's role, with speculation he might see more minutes as a power forward, a position he played early in his career. Currently, Jalen Hood-Schifino is the starting power forward, supported by Gur Lavi and TJ Leaf, who is recovering from a shoulder injury. Sorkin's flexibility could allow him to play alongside athletic big men like Bacot or Hunter, providing Maccabi with varied lineups. Last season, Sorkin had limited minutes alongside Marcio Santos and Zack Hankins, but the early completion of the roster this year allows for more strategic rotations.

Offensively, Sorkin is a smart scorer and passer who can stretch the floor with a 34.1% three-point shooting rate in EuroLeague over the past two seasons. His ability to draw defensive attention could enhance pick-and-roll plays when paired with Hunter or Bacot. Defensively, however, Sorkin struggled guarding smaller players last season, which is why Theis and Bacot were added to strengthen the center position. It is more likely Sorkin will play as a taller power forward, using his size to secure rebounds and provide stability in the paint.

Katash emphasized the advantage of having a deep and versatile frontcourt, a luxury Maccabi lacked last season. Hunter’s presence is expected to ease the load on the centers during the Israeli league games, where Sorkin averaged 13.5 points per game in EuroLeague last season. While minutes will be divided among the four big men, Sorkin’s potential role shift could offer Maccabi new tactical options to control the pace and physicality of games, especially when facing teams with shorter frontlines.
