Maccabi Tel Aviv Considers Position Shift for Roman Sorkin Amid Deep Frontcourt

Maccabi Tel Aviv surprised fans by announcing the return of Shane Hunter to the team ahead of the upcoming season, creating a deep frontcourt rotation that includes four centers: Roman Sorkin, Daniel Theis, Armando Bacot, and the Jewish naturalized player Hunter. Although Hunter is expected to primarily play in the Israeli Basketball Premier League due to his non-foreigner status, the team decided to recall him from loan rather than extend it for another year. Coach Oded Katash praised Hunter as a versatile big man with excellent movement, shooting efficiency, rebounding, pick-and-roll mobility, and shot-blocking ability.

This frontcourt depth opens the possibility for Roman Sorkin to see more minutes playing as a power forward, a position he played early in his career. Currently, Jalen Hood-Schifino is the starting power forward, with Gur Lavi and TJ Leaf (recovering from a shoulder injury) as backups. Sorkin's flexibility and skill set could allow him to share the floor alongside athletic big men like Bacot or Hunter, providing Maccabi with more offensive options and physical presence inside the paint.

Last season, Sorkin logged limited minutes alongside Marcio Santos and Zack Hankins, but the early completion of the roster this year allows Maccabi to experiment with different lineups and surround Sorkin with more athletic players. Offensively, Sorkin is a smart scorer and passer who shoots 34.1% from three-point range in EuroLeague, making him a valuable floor spacer. His ability to draw defensive attention and cut to the basket could increase with more playing time alongside another big man.

Defensively, Sorkin struggled guarding smaller, quicker players last season, which led Maccabi to add Theis and Bacot to strengthen the center position. It is more likely that Sorkin will play as a taller power forward, focusing on rebounding and interior defense while the primary center steps out. Standing 2.08 meters tall, Sorkin’s size and strength could help Maccabi control the boards, an area of instability last season.

While Sorkin enters the season as a leading European center for Maccabi, his minutes at power forward will likely be situational, used to adjust matchups or change the game’s tempo. The presence of Hunter is expected to ease the center’s workload in the Israeli league, but distributing minutes among four big men remains a challenge. Nevertheless, the team’s deep and versatile frontcourt offers a luxury Maccabi lacked last year, potentially enhancing their competitiveness in both domestic and EuroLeague play.
