Israeli Air Force Strikes Hezbollah Target in Beirut's Dahieh, Raising Fears of an Iranian Response
Israel carried out a targeted strike on Sunday at noon in Beirut’s Dahieh district, a Hezbollah stronghold, in response to rocket fire from Hezbollah toward communities in northern Israel. Loud explosions were heard in the area, and footage from the city showed damage to a building and heavy smoke spreading across the district.
The strike came after Hezbollah fired at Israeli settlements in the north in recent hours, and against the backdrop of repeated Israeli warnings that attacks on communities inside Israel would trigger action in Dahieh. The operation was described as a focused strike on a Hezbollah terrorist target.
Shortly after the attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement saying, “Based on the instruction of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, the IDF has just struck terrorist targets of the Hezbollah terrorist organization in Beirut’s Dahieh district in response to Hezbollah fire into Israeli territory. Israel will not tolerate fire on its territory.”
Security officials are said to be on maximum alert over the possibility that Iran could try to respond again, after what the report describes as Tehran’s recent attempt to establish a pattern of escalation. Last Sunday, after an Israeli strike in Dahieh, Iran responded by launching missiles at Israel, which prompted a precise Israeli strike in Iran. The report says the coming days, or even the coming hours, will show whether Iran acts again, despite signs of emerging understandings between Tehran and Washington.
