Jewish Youth from 34 Countries Increasingly Immigrate to Israel and Join IDF Despite Ongoing War

Approximately 300 young Jewish individuals from 34 countries are set to immigrate to Israel this summer through the Garin Tzabar program, aiming to enlist in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as lone soldiers. Since October 7, the program has seen a 33% increase in new participants, with a total of about 550 new immigrants expected to join by the end of 2026. The participants come from countries including the United States, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, and India, among others. The United States leads with 175 recruits this year.

Data from the program reveals that around 85% of participants remain in Israel after their military service to build their lives, and about 30% of their families also immigrate following them. Since 2022, there has been an 85% rise in religious young participants, whose numbers have increased 2.5 times, alongside a twentyfold increase in recruits from France. The adult participant population, many with academic backgrounds, has grown by 65% since October 7.

Before their IDF service, participants engage in volunteer activities across Israel, including agricultural work in conflict zone communities in the north and south, packing food and supplies for soldiers, and supporting local communities. In Ra'anana, home to about 350 participants, they assist with tutoring, reducing educational gaps, and supporting bereaved families.

This year, Garin Tzabar, in collaboration with the Lindenbaum Institute, will launch its second religious Garin Tzabar cohort, with 12 religious young women from the U.S. enlisting as lone soldiers while maintaining their religious lifestyle. The program combines Torah study, spiritual preparation, and personal and community support before and during military service.

The summer 2026 opening event will take place on September 8 at Tel Aviv University. Participants like S. from Chicago express a deep connection to Israel and a strong sense of responsibility and Zionism, especially following the events of October 7. Raz Perl, chairman of the Scouts Movement, highlighted that over 1,500 Garin Tzabar soldiers currently serve across all fronts, emphasizing the growing commitment of young Jews worldwide to Israel amid complex societal challenges. Established in 1991, Garin Tzabar has supported over 8,000 lone soldiers and currently serves more than 1,500 soldiers nationwide.
