Israeli Ministries Launch Joint Support Program for New Immigrant Soldiers and Overseas Volunteers

The Israeli Ministries of Defense, Aliyah and Integration, and Diaspora Affairs have initiated a collaborative program to support new immigrant soldiers and overseas volunteers serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). This joint effort aims to provide continuous assistance from enlistment through citizenship, addressing identified gaps in information, rights, housing, and employment. The initiative follows a government decision in May 2026 to establish a dedicated unit within the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration to enhance support, particularly for lone soldiers.

The program was developed with input from the soldiers and their families to better understand their unique needs. Many immigrant soldiers face challenges such as language barriers, cultural adaptation, limited familiarity with Israeli systems, and often lack close family support in Israel. The new unit will focus on strengthening support continuity before, during, and after military service, improving language and cultural accessibility, ensuring rights are fully utilized, providing emergency assistance, and offering guidance to families abroad.

Research conducted as part of the initiative highlighted the need for clearer, more accessible information and better coordination among organizations assisting these soldiers. Post-service challenges include employment, financial aid, education, housing, and rights utilization, necessitating ongoing support during the transition to civilian life. Roundtable discussions were held to refine the support framework and improve field services.

Key leaders emphasized the importance of mutual responsibility and partnership. Minister of Aliyah and Integration, Ofir Sofer, stressed the government's duty to provide a stable and professional support system for young immigrants who choose to serve in the IDF, especially since October 7, 2026. Minister of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, Amichai Shikli, highlighted the need to empower soldiers and their families, affirming that those who choose to serve Israel deserve comprehensive backing from the state.
