Social Equality Minister Mai Golan Reveals Shin Bet Pressure Over Crime Funding in Arab Sector

Two weeks before the Likud primaries and less than three months ahead of the general elections, Social Equality Minister Mai Golan appeared on the Kippot Barzel program for an interview with Netanel Izak. Golan discussed her choice to pursue a democratic path within Likud rather than accepting reserved spots offered by other right-wing parties, emphasizing her commitment to earning public support through elections.

Golan sharply criticized the political left and professional institutions opposing the right-wing government, labeling them the "delusion camp" and accusing them of rejecting democracy after Prime Minister Netanyahu's decisive election victory. She also addressed personal attacks and racism she faces, particularly from feminist organizations and media commentators who dismiss her background from South Tel Aviv.

A central topic was Golan's handling of budget transfers to the Arab sector under Decision 550, where she halted funds suspected of reaching criminal organizations. She revealed intense pressure from various officials, including Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, who allegedly urged her to release the funds quickly, warning of potential unrest. Golan resisted these demands, leading to attempts to strip her of authority over the budget.

Highlighting a significant achievement, Golan noted the historic involvement of Shin Bet in assisting police efforts against crime families, alongside Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. She revealed that some Arab local leaders even petitioned the Supreme Court against this move, opposing Shin Bet's involvement despite its potential to save lives in their communities.

Towards the interview's end, Golan underscored her ministry's work on behalf of women and the elderly but stressed the broader political battle for Israel's future identity. She called on voters to support fighters unafraid to confront what she termed the "violent deep state," framing the upcoming elections as a choice between a Jewish state or one overwhelmed by illegal immigration and lawlessness.
