Israeli Entrepreneur Shir'el Chugag Joins Gadi Eizenkot's Yashar Party to Promote Government Reform

The Yashar party, led by former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot, announced on Monday the addition of entrepreneur and social activist Shir'el Chugag to its candidate list. Chugag, a resident of Ofakim and co-founder of the Kumo movement, emerged as a prominent voice in public discourse following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Eizenkot praised Chugag as a symbol of citizens who took responsibility after the attack and called for a state commission of inquiry into the event. He highlighted Chugag's leadership qualities, managerial experience, and commitment to restoring public trust in government services.

Eizenkot emphasized the need to improve government efficiency as essential for Israel's recovery and restoring public confidence, which was severely damaged by the October 7 attack and prior political appointments that weakened professional oversight. He expressed optimism that Chugag would help lead this mission.

Chugag stated that the October 7 attack revealed the depth of systemic failures but also demonstrated the strength of Israeli society and individuals who take action for the country. He joined Yashar to bring responsibility, professionalism, and effective governance to state institutions, aiming to build a public service free from political interference that prioritizes citizens' needs.

In the coming weeks, Chugag plans to present a program to introduce Israeli excellence, innovation, and entrepreneurship into government ministries to improve decision-making and create a more efficient and citizen-focused state. His background includes senior roles in the business sector, most recently as CEO of the AM:PM retail chain. During the Hamas attack on Kfar Aza, his sister Dr. Elay Chugag and her family were injured but managed to escape.

Yashar noted that Chugag’s personal experience and national crisis motivated his activism for accountability and change, particularly advocating for a state commission to investigate the October 7 disaster. The party stressed that nearly three years after the tragedy, uncovering the truth and learning lessons are vital for national recovery and preventing future disasters.
