Israeli Billionaires’ Wealth Surges Amid Construction Shift and Global Demand for Israeli Defense Systems
Economic analyst Erez Zadok appeared on Channel 14's morning program "Israel HaBoker" on Monday to discuss major economic trends in Israel. He highlighted a dramatic increase in the wealth of Israeli billionaires, noting that their combined net worth on the Forbes 100 billionaires list has reached $308 billion. Miriam Adelson tops the list with $37.5 billion, followed by Idan Ofer, who recently entered the list and is rapidly climbing. Zadok emphasized that Israeli billionaires’ wealth has grown 24% in the past year and 50% over two years, largely driven by gains in the Israeli stock market and natural gas assets.
The discussion also covered government policies replacing Palestinian workers in the construction sector with foreign laborers from more distant countries. Currently, only about 1,000 foreign workers have been brought in out of an approved 5,000 permits, due to bilateral agreements restricting recruitment to specific countries. This shift marks a significant change in Israel’s labor market.
Zadok further addressed the unprecedented global demand for Israeli defense technology and weaponry. He cited Japan’s recent decision to allocate 2% of its budget to defense and openly purchase Israeli military equipment, a departure from previous secrecy. Other countries like Serbia and the United Arab Emirates have also moved from covert to public procurement of Israeli defense systems. Recent major deals include $3.5 billion for the Arrow 3 system to Germany, $2.2 billion for the Barak system to India, and multi-billion euro contracts with Finland, Romania, and the UAE.
The interview underscored Israel’s growing stature as a key global defense exporter and the economic implications of these shifts, from billionaire wealth accumulation to labor market transformations and international arms sales.
