Police Seize Large Weapons Cache Amid Rising Gunfire in Negev Communities

Over the past weekend, ongoing gunfire in Negev communities prompted police operations in the towns of Hura and Lakia. Authorities confiscated significant quantities of weapons and ammunition, including two M16 rifles, 45 loaded magazines, and various types of bullets in Lakia. Two local residents were arrested for questioning. In Hura, police uncovered another cache containing 19 40mm grenade launcher rounds, 15 loaded M16 magazines, and additional ammunition. Five individuals were detained on suspicion of illegal weapons possession and use.

Residents report growing unease as frequent gunfire becomes normalized, with some having unfortunately become accustomed to the sounds. Local leaders emphasize the need for a coordinated government response beyond police efforts, calling for stricter judicial penalties for illegal arms possession. One community representative stated, "The Prime Minister must understand the scale of this issue affecting the entire country and act immediately."

Police confirmed the operations aimed to prevent violent escalations by targeting criminal elements and confiscating illegal weapons. The seized arms and detainees were transferred to the Ayarat police station for further investigation, with suspects brought before the Beersheba Magistrate's Court for detention extension hearings. Authorities continue efforts to curb violence and illegal arms proliferation in the southern region.
