IDF Investigates Deadly Explosion in Southern Lebanon as Hezbollah Violates Ceasefire

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continue probing the deadly explosion in Majdal Zoun, southern Lebanon, which killed Lieutenant Colonel Harel Birnstok, 34, from Nokedim, and Staff Sergeant Tamir Vaknin, 33, from Eilat. Both soldiers served in Battalion 2855 of the 55th Paratroopers Brigade. According to a report by Walla News, the IDF assesses that the explosive device was an old Hezbollah mine planted before the ceasefire began but went undetected. The blast occurred inside a building where IDF forces had operated for weeks, prompting a thorough investigation.

Despite the device being planted prior to the ceasefire, the IDF has classified the incident as a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement, emphasizing that killing soldiers during the ceasefire with an explosive device constitutes a breach. The military also notes ongoing Hezbollah attempts to operate in southern Lebanon. Over the past weekend, Hezbollah launched an explosive drone at an IDF force, causing no casualties or damage. The IDF chose not to publicize this attack immediately, citing operational security concerns.

Additionally, the IDF is concerned about residents returning to the village of Al-Mansouri, where seven Hezbollah militants were killed in the past month. Israeli forces continue surveillance and efforts to thwart threats in the area. Leaflets have been distributed warning locals that the region remains a combat zone and that returning is dangerous.
