Turkey Eyes Sixth-Generation Fighter Jet Amid Regional Security Developments
Turkey is actively pursuing advancements in its air force capabilities, focusing on acquiring F-35 jets and developing its own fifth-generation fighter, the Kaan. A recent Turkish article linked to President Erdogan's administration highlights Ankara's consideration of joining the GCAP consortium, a multinational project involving Italy, Japan, Britain, and recently Canada, aimed at developing sixth-generation fighter aircraft. Turkey's established defense industry and experience in drone technology, including cooperation with Italy's Leonardo on unmanned aerial vehicles, position it as a valuable contributor to the GCAP initiative.
Meanwhile, Israel's security cooperation with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) extends beyond the Iron Dome missile defense system. Leaked documents from a former senior Elbit Systems official reveal attempts to sell Hermes 900 drones and electronic warfare systems to the UAE between late 2021 and early 2023, motivated by Houthi missile and drone attacks on Abu Dhabi in January 2022. Although neither Elbit nor the UAE confirmed the sale publicly, a $2.3 billion contract announced by Elbit in November 2025 was later identified as involving the UAE.
In a separate development, Iran faces internal opposition linked to the family of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Mohammad Baqer Harazi, connected by marriage to the Khamenei family and head of the "Hezbollah of Iran" organization, recently outlined a detailed plan to replace the Islamic Republic with an Islamic government. Harazi claims to have established a shadow government and aims to mobilize a network of 250,000 supporters across 1,000 cities, with funding pledged from Hezbollah. This emergence of organized dissent contrasts with previous sporadic opposition efforts.
