Turkey's Air Power Poses Potential Challenge to Israel Amid Strained Ties
Turkey possesses a formidable air force that could present a significant challenge to Israel in the event of a conflict, according to a report by Calcalist. This assessment comes amid a notable deterioration in relations between the two countries.
The Turkish Air Force's strength lies in its substantial fleet, including approximately 273 F-16 fighter jets, many of which are undergoing modernization with advanced radar systems and conformal fuel tanks to extend their range. The country also operates around 30 older F-4 Phantom jets, which were previously upgraded by Israel. Ankara is looking to further bolster its fighter jet capabilities by acquiring 44 Eurofighter Typhoon jets and is developing its own stealth fighter, the KAAN, with aspirations to potentially purchase American F-35s in the future.
Turkey's arsenal is further enhanced by precision-guided munitions, such as laser and satellite-guided bombs, Tolun glide bombs, and SOM cruise missiles capable of striking land and sea targets. For air-to-air combat, Turkish F-16s can utilize American AIM-9X and AIM-120 missiles, while Turkey is also developing its own indigenous missile, the Gokdogan, designed to counter electronic warfare.
Supporting these offensive capabilities are seven KC-135 refueling aircraft, extending operational endurance, and E-7 Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft. Electronic warfare and reconnaissance are handled by HAVA SOJ aircraft. Unmanned aerial vehicles, including the Bayraktar TB2, Anka, and Akinci, are also a key component, used for reconnaissance, strikes, and carrying various armaments, alongside Kargi loitering munitions.
Historically, Israel and Turkey shared a significant defense technology partnership, with Israel supplying arms, drone systems, components, and technology, and assisting in F-4 upgrades. Despite Turkey's air force having combat experience from NATO operations in Kosovo and counter-Kurdish operations in northern Iraq, a direct comparison with Israel's air power suggests quantitative advantage does not guarantee battlefield superiority. Israel benefits from a more advanced air and missile defense system and extensive experience in multi-front, prolonged combat operations. Turkish pilots gain valuable experience through regular NATO joint exercises, enhancing their coordination and data-sharing capabilities in complex air environments.
