Samsung Unveils Galaxy Fold 8 as Its Most Compact and Practical Foldable Yet
Samsung has introduced the new Galaxy Fold 8, marking a significant evolution in its foldable smartphone lineup. Unlike previous Fold models, which resembled a regular smartphone when closed and opened into a square tablet, the Fold 8 features a smaller, wider 5.5-inch external screen and unfolds into a 7.6-inch rectangular tablet. This design makes it more compact and easier to hold, roughly passport-sized and weighing 200 grams, with a slim 4.5 mm thickness when open. It also boasts enhanced durability with Gorilla Glass Victus Ceramic 3 and an IP48 rating, allowing water immersion up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.
Under the hood, the Fold 8 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Elite processor, paired with 12GB of RAM and storage options from 256GB to 1TB. Performance is strong, handling daily tasks and heavy gaming, though some minor software glitches with touch responsiveness in games were noted. The device includes a 4,800mAh battery supporting 45W fast charging, delivering up to a day and a half of use depending on workload.
The Fold 8 runs Android 17 with Samsung’s One UI 9, featuring smart software optimizations for the foldable format. New camera features include AI-powered video stabilization and a "My FanCam" mode that focuses on a selected subject during video recording. The external screen adapts well to apps despite its smaller size, and the tablet mode offers improved multitasking and media viewing experiences.
However, the camera setup is a notable compromise, equipped with only two 50MP wide and ultra-wide lenses and lacking a telephoto zoom, which is unusual for a premium device. Selfie cameras are 10MP each, and while image quality is decent, it falls short compared to competitors and other Samsung models.
Priced between 6,000 and 7,500 shekels, the Fold 8 sits between the Fold Ultra and Flip models, offering a balanced option for foldable enthusiasts. Rumors suggest Apple is also developing a similar foldable iPhone, likely at a comparable price point. Overall, the Galaxy Fold 8 is praised for its compactness, usability, and display quality, making it Samsung’s most successful foldable device to date, though its high cost limits accessibility.
