Security Guard Who Assaulted Hapoel Petah Tikva Fan Released to House Arrest Despite Police Opposition

About 48 hours after a violent incident that shocked Israeli football, a security guard caught on video striking a Hapoel Petah Tikva fan with an iron rod was released to house arrest by court order, against the police's recommendation. Judge Maor Even Chen accepted the defense's claim that the guard is mentally struggling and therefore should not remain in custody. The judge acknowledged the severity of the alleged actions but ruled that the investigation could continue while the suspect is under alternative supervision. He also urged the investigative unit to assess the suspect's cognitive state promptly.

The incident occurred during halftime of a Toto Cup match on Wednesday between Hapoel Petah Tikva and Maccabi Netanya at HaMoshava Stadium. Fans clashed with security personnel in the stands, during which one security guard hit a fan on the head with a metal rod. The injured fan was taken to Beilinson Hospital in mild to moderate condition, according to Magen David Adom.

The assault, recorded and widely shared on social media, sparked significant public outrage. Hapoel Petah Tikva issued a statement condemning the event and confirmed ongoing cooperation with the security company and Israeli police, who are leading the investigation. The club demanded swift and decisive police action, which led to arrests shortly after the incident. Additionally, the club announced it will provide the assaulted fan with a season ticket as a gesture of support.
