Israeli Border Police Volunteers Face Political Restrictions Ahead of Knesset Elections

A controversial directive circulated among Israeli Border Police volunteers and rapid response unit members ahead of the 26th Knesset elections has sparked outrage. The document imposes political restrictions on volunteers, including bans on direct communication with politicians, ministers, or Knesset members except through the police chief’s office. It also prohibits participation in party primaries, membership in party leadership, and work with the Central Elections Committee.

Significantly, the guidelines restrict digital expression by forbidding volunteers from liking, commenting on, or sharing political content on social media, as well as criticizing police or government policies in interviews or press conferences. Volunteers expressed strong opposition, arguing the restrictions infringe on their private lives and exceed the police’s authority, especially since they serve voluntarily and are not full-time officers.

In response to the backlash, the Israeli Police clarified that these rules apply only during official duty hours and do not limit volunteers’ private political activities. They announced plans to distribute an official detailed clarification to all relevant parties to prevent future misunderstandings.
