Israeli Security Chief Warns Against Gaza Disarmament Plan Amid US Support

Shin Bet Chief David Zini warned Israeli ministers on Thursday against the peace council's roadmap for disarming Gaza, arguing that Hamas views the plan as a strategic political victory rather than a genuine step toward disarmament. He stated that Hamas's apparent willingness to disarm is deceptive and intended to delay Israeli military action until after upcoming elections. Zini emphasized that Hamas is stalling and attempting to bind Israel to an agreement that would restrict its ability to resume fighting.

During the cabinet discussion, ministers reviewed the 14-day preparation phase proposed by the peace council's plan, which would require Israel to refrain from targeted assassinations. Israeli officials clarified that Israel has neither signed nor officially approved the roadmap or a related document concerning the deployment of a multinational force in Gaza, citing significant reservations. Consequently, Israel has not authorized the entry of any international force into the Gaza Strip.

The cabinet meeting took place amid ongoing US efforts to advance the peace council's initiative and the Gaza disarmament roadmap. However, resistance is growing in Jerusalem due to concerns that the plan would limit Israel's operational freedom without guaranteeing Hamas's disarmament. Israeli ministers have made clear that Israel will not agree to any arrangement that restricts the Israel Defense Forces' freedom of action.
