Tattoo Artist’s Business Sparks Base44 Creation, Now Joins Israeli High-Tech Sector
Yuval Shlomo, 29, who previously ran tattoo studios in Haifa and Tel Aviv, has transitioned from the tattoo industry to the high-tech world, inspired by her husband Maor Shlomo’s startup Base44. Yuval credits her tattoo business as the initial trigger for Base44’s creation, as technical challenges in managing her studios led Maor to develop software solutions that evolved into the company. Base44, founded by Maor Shlomo, was sold to Wix for $80 million shortly after its establishment, with potential additional earnings of up to $150 million based on performance milestones.
Yuval recently shared on LinkedIn her journey from tattoo artist to tech professional, emphasizing that entrepreneurship transcends formal tech backgrounds. She now manages marketing and community at Base4u Solutions, a small company building business management systems on Base44’s technology, founded by mutual acquaintance Roy Alba. This firm helps clients implement complex systems tailored to their needs, bridging gaps between Base44’s platform and end users.
Yuval stopped tattooing due to recurring hand inflammations and a desire for change, though she continues artistic pursuits through drawing. She highlights how Base44’s software initially simplified her tattoo design process, reducing hours of work to minutes. The acquisition of Base44 by Wix has positioned the startup as a key asset in Wix’s AI-driven competition, despite short-term losses and recent layoffs at Wix.
Maor Shlomo, who married Yuval six months ago, has also established a cancer-focused startup fund in memory of his late mother. Yuval reflects on the emotional impact of the October 7 attacks, noting how many clients sought tattoos as lasting memorials, including a poignant piece commemorating a fallen soldier. She advocates for thoughtful, meaningful tattoos that endure over time.
