OpenAI Removes ChatGPT Text Conversation Limits for Free Users and Updates Models

OpenAI announced major updates to ChatGPT, including the removal of text conversation limits for free and Go plan users starting next week. Users will be able to engage in unlimited regular text chats without encountering the usual cap after extended use. However, this removal applies only to standard text messages; features like file uploads, image creation and analysis, and other tools will remain subject to usage limits. OpenAI emphasized that unlimited use is still regulated by abuse prevention mechanisms, so accounts exhibiting automated behavior or sending excessive messages may face restrictions.

Additionally, the GPT 5.6 Luna model will become the default for Free and Go users this week. This model is faster and more efficient than the previous GPT 5.5 Instant, with internal tests showing a 62% reduction in responses containing factual errors. Free users will also gain access to a new "Think" button, allowing the model to spend more time on complex queries requiring analysis, planning, problem-solving, or deep comparison. OpenAI did not guarantee unlimited use of this feature.

Paid Plus and Pro subscribers will receive an update to GPT 5.6 Sol, designed to deliver more focused answers, reduce unnecessary detail, and improve accuracy on date-, number-, rule-, source-, and assumption-dependent topics. This model will handle both quick and deep-thinking responses for a more consistent style. A new slider feature will let paid users adjust the depth of thinking per response, from low for simple questions to high for research, writing, coding, and decision-making. The updated Sol model and slider are rolling out gradually across the website, apps, and desktop software starting immediately.

The rollout means not all users will see Luna, the Think button, or the slider immediately. Free and Go users should receive the new model this week and unlimited chats the following week. These changes do not affect the GPT 5.6 Sol model powering Codex and the Work environment.
