Osher Ad Tops as Cheapest Grocery Chain for Friday Shabbat Meals in Price Comparison
A recent price comparison conducted via the Prices website reveals significant cost differences among grocery chains for typical Shabbat meal shopping in the religious sector. The study included dozens of common items such as basic ingredients, chicken, fruits and vegetables, beverages, baking products, and dairy. Osher Ad emerged as the cheapest chain, with a basket cost of 884.90 shekels, while Bar Kol Tov was the most expensive at 999.98 shekels, showing a price gap of 115.08 shekels or about 13%.
Individual product price disparities were also notable. For example, 500 grams of dry yeast sold for 10.90 shekels at Yesh Chesed, compared to 14.90 shekels at Bar Kol Tov and Netiv Chesed, a 37% difference. Another striking gap was found in the price of 1 liter of 100% natural red grape juice (tirosh), costing 11.90 shekels at Osher Ad versus 18.90 shekels at Bar Kol Tov, a 59% difference.
The findings highlight that even routine Shabbat shopping can yield substantial savings through price comparison. Given the rising cost of living and food expenses, a difference of over 100 shekels per shopping trip could accumulate to thousands of shekels annually for many families. Consumers are advised to compare prices across chains before shopping to maximize savings.
