OpenAI Begins Charging for ChatGPT PowerPoint Integration Starting August 7

OpenAI is ending the free usage period for ChatGPT for PowerPoint for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise customers as of August 7, 2024. From that date, all actions performed with the tool will be billed based on a token usage pricing model. ChatGPT for PowerPoint enables users to create new presentations, edit existing slides, analyze presentation structure and narrative, and convert source documents into slide content directly within PowerPoint without switching to the ChatGPT website.

According to OpenAI's pricing, charges depend on the number of tokens processed, including input text, cached data, and output generated. For the GPT 5.6 Sol model, the rates are $5 per million input tokens, $0.50 per million cached tokens, and $30 per million output tokens. Business accounts will be billed under a flexible workspace pricing model, with usage beyond included quotas drawing from a shared organizational credit pool if enabled by workspace administrators. This means actual costs may vary significantly depending on document length, slide count, and request complexity.

Enterprise and Education customers will be charged similarly to existing ChatGPT integrations with Excel and Sheets, paying based on actual token consumption rather than fixed fees per task. The new pricing does not imply that individual users who install the PowerPoint plugin will be automatically charged separately. The pricing update specifically targets organizational environments and their credit pools. System administrators in organizations using the tool are advised to review access settings, quotas, and usage reports immediately. Special attention should be given to tasks involving long presentations or large source files, as these can consume many tokens and increase costs starting August 7, 2024.
