Google Ends Key Gmail Feature for External Email Accounts Starting 2027

Google announced a major change to its Gmail service that will affect users managing multiple email accounts through a single Gmail inbox. Starting January 2027, Google will discontinue the “Send As” feature for non-Google email addresses linked to Gmail accounts. This means users will no longer be able to send emails from external addresses via the Gmail interface. Additionally, Google plans to end the Gmailify service, which allowed users to apply Gmail’s spam filtering and organizational tools to external email accounts. Support for retrieving messages via the POP protocol through the browser interface will also be discontinued.

Google explained that these changes aim to reduce maintenance resources and focus on Gmail’s core services. The impact will vary: users with Google aliases or paid Google Workspace accounts can continue using the “Send As” feature without interruption. The Gmail mobile app will still allow viewing multiple accounts, but replying from external addresses through Gmail will no longer be fully supported.

The announcement has sparked concern among users who rely on managing several email addresses within one Gmail account. To prepare for the changes, Google recommends transitioning to external email clients like Thunderbird or Outlook, switching to alternative email services, or upgrading to a paid Google Workspace account. These options will enable users to continue managing multiple email addresses from a single platform after the 2027 deadline.
